Mammoth Cave National Park is the state’s largest and most well-known cave system, with over 412 miles of mapped caverns, but there are plenty of other subterranean grottos just waiting to be explored. These caves have served a variety of purposes, from criminal shelters to burial sites and places for medicinal research. Thanks to a unique topography and significant underground erosion, there are more than 130 caves in Kentucky. Those in the know rave about Cascade Cave, which features a variety of exquisite geological formations and culminates with a 30-foot underground waterfall. You would, however, be missing out on one of the most beautiful and underrated pastimes in the state: exploring the many caves in Kentucky. Venture underground to admire Cascade Cave with its 30-foot subterranean waterfall and X Cave with its dazzling stone arches, spirals, and pipes. Low flow, comes out of side of hill (cave), wet weather falls, may or may not be on private land-close call. So threatening your Derby betting bookie with a Louisville Slugger while simultaneously chowing down on KFC might sound like the ultimate Kentucky experience. Carter Caves was pretty amazing! Highly recommend! We did the Three Bridges Trail, Carter Caves Natural Bridge trail, and do a tour of Cascade Cave. Now, I can't wait to see the beauty that is Carter Caves. Limestones, water deposited through many a year, they are throughout, with every appearance of a frozen waterfall. We began our visit first thing in the morning with a tour of Cascade Cave.
So, when I heard about Carter Caves State Park, I had to know more. I'm always interested in visiting caves that I have yet to see. We actually have a couple of small caves near our house in Philpot, KY.
